Magees take bronze after semifinal defeat

01/07/2015

Chloe and Sam Magee brought Team Ireland’s badminton journey to an end today at the European games. The Irish number one pair lost out to Gaetan Mittelheisser and Audrey Fontaine of France in the semifinal of the mixed doubles event. The Irish lost the first and looked out of the game in the second. After a number of hard fought points the Magees got themselves back into the match at 20 all in the second. The French kept calm and took the closing points to win the second game 23-21 and book a place in the final.

“It has been a bit of a rollercoaster this week, we have had hoped to come away with Gold but we have had to settle for two bronze instead. The men’s doubles were not seeded at this event and it is a great achievement for them to be going home with such a big result. Our players have had a great team attitude supporting each other throughout the event. We now move our focus to Olympic qualification as the competition begins again.”  Daniel Magee

Despite two wins out of three in the womens singles Chloe failed to make it out of the group stage. Chloe lost her first match singles match in Baku to eventual group winner Kati Tolmoff in a tight encounter which finished 18-21, 17-21. The irish woman bounced back in her second game a 21-9, 21-7 victory over Latvian Sefere Kristine. Despite victory in her final game, against Lianne Tan (11-21, 22-20, 21-12), Chloe finished third in the group due to points difference.
